This group of band friends met up to carpool and caravan to the Hawk Band Banquet on Saturday night. They were funny and excited about the banquet, being held at the Westin Hotel in the Domain.

Grad Photo Booth

As part of the 5th grade graduation festivities at Dane's school, I was co-chair of the dance and dinner and responsible for the photo booth on the night of the dance.

Just thought I would share a few fun pics of Dane from that night.

Mason brought Dane to the dance.
(I had to be there early to get set-up.)
 Dane and friends eating dinner.
Dane and his teacher, Mrs. Husmann.
 Glow sticks anyone?
Darth Vader, er.... I mean Ed, stopped by when he got into town.
 Bryan, Dane, and Sebastian.
Fun night!!

D.A.R.E. Essay Showdown!

On Thursday morning, Dane, and the 4 other D.A.R.E. essay 1st place winners gathered in front of the 5th grade student body to read their winning essays for what turned out to be an "essay showdown." (We didn't know it was a competition!)
One by one the kids read their essays. Then it was Dane's turn. D.A.R.E. Officer Dillard called Dane up. She commented on his tie. :-) (He was the only one to dress up for the presentation.)
After all 5 kids had finished the presentation of their essays, Officer Dillard announced the winner of the "essay showdown." To our surprise and delight, Dane won it!!

I love that Dane reached out for the handshake with Officer Dillard.
Dane was presented with a very nice D.A.R.E. backpack and a medal.
Dane's fan club was in attendance!
 Happy guy!
Officer Dillard is the best. She is so friendly and the kids just love her.
Grandad recorded the presentation. I will post it here when I get a copy.

Selfies with O'ma

I went down to visit O'ma, in New Braunfels, on Monday. While she was obviously "blue" and sad for herself, she did light up at seeing herself on the camera phone screen. If a 99 year old loves it, I guess that proves that everybody loves taking selfies!
We went down to the common area for a little Cinco De mayo celebration. It consisted of chips and queso, non alcohol strawberry daiquiris, and sombrero wearing while maraca shaking to some classic Spanish music. :-) O'le!

Math Pentathon

For the first time, Dane join the Math Pentathlon team at his school. They initially met one day a week after school to learn and practice the games. Closer to competition, they begin meeting twice a week.

Math Pentathlon is a program of interactive problem-solving games, supportive curricular and instructional activities, and assessment tools for students in grades K-7. This motivational program strengthens basic math concepts and skills, aligns with National and State Mathematics Standards, and stimulates creative thinking while developing problem-solving skills. (from the taken MP website)

In grades four and five, the games are "Queens and Guards," "Juggle," "Contig 60," "Fab-A-Diffy," and "Stars & Bars." All have some luck and some strategy involved.

On Saturday, May 3rd, MP teams from Austin and Pflugerville met at the Delco Center in Austin for the big tournament. The tournament is set up so that each contestant plays each game once and always against someone who is not from their own team. Each game is 45 mins long. So it was full day for us!

This is what the competition floor looks like. Parents and spectators sit in the upper area of bleachers to watch. You may notice that there is an adult at every game station. They are the game monitors. Game monitors are there to "judge" if a challenge on the rules is called by either player. However, they are not allowed to talk or comment on anything they see unless there was a challenge called.

Ed volunteered as a game monitor for "Queens and Guards."

Dane played well and won 3 out of the 5 games. Earning himself 11 points.
Once all the games were played, the teams came out one at a time, with their school banners, for applause and awards.
Awards are based on points. 10 points and below earns a ribbon of participation. 11 points earns a ribbon of "Honorable Mention." 12 points earns a bronze medal, 13 points earns a silver medal, 14 points earns a gold medal, and 15 point earns a "Hall of Fame" medal (which means you won all 5 games.)

Dane and teammate Abigail earned "Honorable Mention" ribbons. Great job for first time in a competition!
The rest of the Bulldog Team earned ribbons of participation. Everyone on the team won at least one game so the coaches were very pleased!
Dane really enjoyed Math Pentathlon. We are hopeful his new middle school will have a team he can join so he can participate again next year.

Centipede Costume

Granlally came up on Sunday afternoon to make Dane a centipede costume for his roll as Centipede in the upcoming school play, James and the Giant Peach.

It all started with an online costume idea and a successful Goodwill shopping trip! Can't wait to see all the pieces together! For now, here is a sneak peek at the jacket with extra centipede feet.
Thank you for sharing your sewing talents with us Grandlally!
