Science Fair Regional

Congratulations to Dane, who earned a 1st place ribbon, on his ice cream melting project, at the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair today!

After meeting with his judge, he reported feeling confident and successful in relaying his project information. Looks like the judge agreed!

Nick Offerman

For Christmas, I was able to get Ed ONE, and only one, gift he didn't know about. Surprise & Merry Christmas! Tickets to see actor and comedian Nick Offerman live!

You see, we LOVE the TV show "Parks and Rec" and watch it together every week. So when I saw that Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson, on the show) was coming to Austin, I jumped on it.
Unfortunately, I saw it too late and we got nose bleed seats. Oh, well.

The bonus was that Nick's wife, Megan Mullally, was also there with her band called "Nancy & Beth." Damn! Can she sing! While the whole musical comedy show was funny and original, I was blown away by the singing (both serious and funny songs) of Megan Mullally and Stephanie Hunt. I would go see them anywhere any time- but better seats a must! Ha!
Another fun time with my hubby!

Academic Meet

Dane participated in the PISD UIL Academic Meet on February 15th, in the category of Oral Reading. To compete in Oral Reading, Dane had to try out at the campus level to be chosen as one of only three 4th and 5th graders sent to the meet. Then he had to memorize and put movement to 3 poems by Jeff Moss, (famous for his work on Sesame Street), called The Other Side of the Door, I Don't Want to Live On the Moon, and At the Doctor's Office.

At the meet, all 51 students competing in the category, performed in two rounds with a different judge in each room. Then the 51 students were narrowed down to 8, based on scores from round 1 and 2, for the Finals Round. Dane was chosen as one of the 8 finalists!

After the Finals Round, we waited for awards. At 2:00 they began awards for all the competitive categories. Oral Reading was the last to be announced.

Here are Dane and classmate, Isabelle, hanging out while we waited.

Dane was awarded 6th place! He got a nice trophy out of it too!
 Congratulations, Dane!

While we are so proud of his work and placement in the Meet, I have to just say that I am even more proud of Dane's attitude about the whole thing. I love that he was mindful enough to be okay with how ever the competition turned out for him personally- win or lose. And even though he was able to verbalize that he disagreed with the order of placement of the 8 finalists, he did so in a calm way and was still happy to receive what he did- including a family celebration late lunch at his favorite pizza joint. Now that is one amazing kid!

BJ Thomas

On Valentine's night Ed and I drove to New Braunfels to see singer BJ Thomas in concert. He was big in the 70's with hits like "Rain Drops Keeps Falling on My Head," and "Hooked on a Feeling."

It was an interesting show, as Ed and I were the "young crowd" who attended the show. Ha!

Here are a few pics from our 2nd row seats, taken on my phone camera.
Wayne and Lally are on the board at the Brauntex Theater. They worked the event so they gave us their tickets- Thank you!! They also got us back stage for a Meet & Greet with BJ Thomas. Fun stuff!

Ron White VIP

Back in June, Ed and I bought VIP tickets to see comedian, Ron White, in person. The VIP package included a meet & greet, autographed book and autographed lanyard, plus a photo with the hilarious comedian.

As luck would have it, I responded immediately to an advanced notice on Face Book about the VIP seats. Apparently, I was the first person to order because we got FIRST ROW, dead smack CENTER seats!! Awesome!

Oh, yes. We were bathed in Ron's cigar smoke, could see the flame from his lighter, and smell the tequila when he opened the bottle to refresh his drink- all from our amazing seats!

Even though they said no photograph, Ed managed to sneak two pics without flash using his phone. They aren't fabulous but you get the idea.
The VIP pics are coming soon but in the meantime, here is a selfie of myself and my handsome hubby with our VIP lanyards. :-)

Sax Emsemble

Mason is participating in UIL Solo and Emsemble today. So, yesterday, two of his four other ensemble members came over to the house to practice with him. We had an "ice day" off of school that turned out to be a lovely day so, why not?

They started out the practice in his room (cause they are loud)!
Here are Grace, Paige, and Mason practicing.

And just when they thought they were finished, we had them come play for the adults and kids that were hanging at the house. Remember, it was an "ice day" so we made the most of it with cards, games, and outdoor play!
 Good luck, sax kids!

UPDATE- Mason received the top score of 1 on his solo and his ensemble received the top score of 1 also!!

UNT Snow

Clark posted some snow pictures, from Denton, taken on the UNT campus. What a fun experience for someone who grew up without snow! If not fun, at least it is a cold experience! (By the way, that is a bandana over his mouth to "block the windchill.")

Mason's Car

It is a big day for Mason- he is officially a car owner! Whoohooo! He now has a 2006 Saturn Vue in which to get himself around town.

His first order of business, put on the new licenses plates!
His second order of business, hang the car air freshener he has been holding on to since October!

Poor guy! We saw the car last night and all were pleased and excited about it. But today Mason had to wait at school for hours and hours... and hours until we texted him around 1:30pm that the deal went off without a hitch! When he came out of school his smile was a mile wide! :-)
